This will be an informal discussion about the San Luis Valley from my personal point of view and experiences moving with my family to the Valley.

First let’s talk about life in San Luis Valley from an outsiders perspective. See I know firsthand what it’s like to live in the Valley compared to living in a larger city. We talk about the San Luis Valley a lot on our site, but it’s because is one the best places to buy inexpensive property in the United States. Taxes are tolerable, shopping is somewhat available, it is away from it all for the most part and is an absolutely gorgeous place to live.

Trinchera Ranch Fort Garland


Trinchera Ranch is located near the town of Fort Garland.  It consists of 170,000 acres located near the Sangre de Cristo mountain range, offering landscapes ranging from sagebrush flats to pinions on the hills at an elevation of 8,000 feet. 

Formerly known as Forbes Ranch, owned by Steve Forbes, the ranch was sold to Louis Moore Bacon in 2007 after Mr. Forbes decided Bacon-with his solid conservation record,  could be trusted to preserve the ranch.  To date the ranch still offers its facilities as a corporate retreat and it is still used as a private hunting preserve.  In conjunction with the Division of National Wildlife, the ranch offers guided hunting tours during elk and deer season; available only to Colorado residents.
